The house of Lumiris
Lumiris began with a simple conviction: a light is never an accessory. It changes the way a room is lived in — it softens an evening, gives a space its structure, turns an ordinary room into a retreat.
Most people buy a light for how it looks switched off. We choose ours for what they do switched on. That distinction runs through everything on this site.
We don't set out to offer everything. Every pendant, wall light and outdoor fitting is chosen after an exacting edit: the rightness of the material, the character of the design, the quality of the light it casts. What wouldn't convince us in our own home never reaches the catalogue.
Fittings whose shade throws a hard-edged shadow instead of a soft one. Stone that has been polished until it stops reading as stone. Pieces so tied to a trend that they will look dated before the guarantee runs out.
Materials that live with light rather than merely endure it — the ones that change through the day and come alive at dusk. Proportions that hold up in a small British room, not only in a photographer's studio. And a light output you can actually live under for an entire evening.
Four materials come back again and again in our collection. Not for how they photograph, but for how they behave once the switch is on.
Translucent stone
The only stone that behaves like a lampshade. Light passes through it rather than bouncing off, picking up the veining on the way and turning a switched-on fitting into a lit object rather than a light source. Every block is cut from natural stone, so no two shades are identical — the variation in colour and vein is the material, not a flaw. It gives its best in warm white, where the honey tones in the stone come forward.
Open-grained stone
Travertine gives a room weight. Its porous, open grain reads as texture from across the room and catches light along every edge, which is why it sits so well in contemporary and natural interiors where everything else is smooth. Used as a shade it diffuses; used as a base or a collar it anchors. Like alabaster, tone and grain vary from piece to piece.
Opal, smoked, amber
Glass is where you control glare. Opal diffuses almost completely and is the safest choice above a dining table, where the source sits near eye level. Smoked and amber glass absorb part of the output and soften what comes through, trading brightness for atmosphere — beautiful in the evening, rarely enough as a room's only light. Ribbed and textured glass sits between the two, scattering the light without swallowing it.
Structure and finish
Metal is the frame the light is built on, and the finish decides the mood. Brushed brass warms a cool room and flatters warm white. Matt black recedes and lets the light do the talking, which is why it dominates our outdoor range. Powder-coated aluminium is what survives a British winter on an exposed wall — lighter than steel and it doesn't bleed rust down your render.
We look at what the fitting does to a wall and to a face before we look at its silhouette. A beautiful piece that glares is a failed piece.
Stone that is stone, glass that is glass, brass that isn't a coating waiting to flake. Where a piece uses natural stone, we say so and we say that it varies.
Caps in UK nomenclature — E14 (SES), E27 (ES), GU10, G9 — so the bulb you need is the one on the shelf at your local shop. Mains at 230V. IP ratings stated on every outdoor product page, and an honest one.
We back every piece for two years. That is a filter as much as a promise: it removes anything we wouldn't want to see come back.
A single ceiling fitting flattens a room and pushes everyone's shadow onto the wall. Layer instead: a pendant for height and character, wall lights for a lower, warmer level in the evening. Most rooms want two or three sources, rarely one.
2700–3000K in a living room or bedroom: warm, relaxing, forgiving. 4000K in a kitchen or home office, where you need to see properly. Anything cooler in a living space reads as an office, whatever the fitting costs.
Hang a pendant 75 to 90cm above the tabletop — low enough to light the surface, high enough to stay out of everyone's eyeline. For a long table, a linear bar or two to three aligned pendants beat one oversized shade.
Outdoor lighting is judged on two things here: what it does to a facade after dark, and whether it survives February. Every outdoor fitting we sell carries an IP rating stated on its product page — IP44 for a sheltered porch, IP65 for an exposed wall, a path or a driveway. We would rather turn a piece down than guess at its rating.
Up-and-down wall lights graze brickwork and render and make a plain facade read as architecture. Bollards mark a route without glare at eye level. And because most outdoor fittings are wired rather than plugged in, they should be installed by a qualified electrician, to BS 7671 and Part P of the Building Regulations. We say that on the product pages too, rather than leaving you to find out at the checkout.
On every order, no minimum. Dispatched within 24 to 48 hours, with tracking by email.
Free returns with a prepaid label, including if you simply changed your mind. Alongside your statutory rights, never instead of them.

Sizing, colour temperature, IP ratings. Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm, with a reply within 8 to 24 hours.
Lumiris is a small operation, and we think that shows in the right places. There is no buying committee here: the person who chose a piece is the person who answers when you ask whether it will work above your table.
We trade as Lumiris and we are registered in England and Wales as AKYT LTD, company number 17022802, at 71-75 Shelton Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9JQ. That matters more than it sounds: you always know who you are dealing with, and where.
If you are furnishing a whole project rather than a single room — an architect, a developer, a hotel — our Trade page is the way in, with a tailored quote within 48 working hours. For everything else, write to us and you'll get a considered answer, not a template.
Not sure where to start? Tell us about the room and we'll point you at three pieces — get in touch.
