The black aluminium body carries the panel along its top edge and releases the light through a vertical slot. Its IP65 rating (weatherproof) seals it against dust and water jets, which covers an exposed facade just as well as an uncovered terrace. Four lengths are available, from 20cm to 100cm (8" to 39.5"), from a simple marker light to a bar that structures a whole wall. Two colour temperatures are offered.
Solar output follows the daylight the panel actually receives. Through a British winter, roughly from November to February, days are short and frequently overcast, so run times will be shorter than in midsummer. The light still works; it simply holds less charge, and it recovers as the days lengthen. A south- or west-facing position with nothing shading the panel around the middle of the day makes more difference than any other single choice. Facade: because there is nothing to wire, it can go on a wall that has never had a supply run to it. IP65 means it copes with a fully exposed elevation, driving rain included.
Garden: on a boundary wall or a shed, it gives light without a trench or a run of conduit.
Terrace: the 20cm (8") version marks a step or a corner without taking over the space. A sheltered porch suits it equally well, and the panel will still charge there provided the sky is open above it.
How well a solar wall light performs depends entirely on where it faces: point it south or west, and check that no roof overhang or planting shades the panel in the middle of the day. On a north-facing elevation the charge will be insufficient for a good part of the year. Choose the length by the surface you are dressing rather than by output: 20cm (8") to mark a point, 100cm (39.5") to structure a wall. Set the centre line at around 1.8m (71") above the ground. Warm white suits terraces where people linger; neutral white suits entrances and routes people walk through.
