The solar version needs no electrical work at all. The mains-wired version connects to an outdoor supply, so it should be installed by a qualified electrician, in compliance with BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations) and Part P of the Building Regulations, with the circuit protected by an RCD. The manufacturer does not state how the wired version terminates, so confirm the connection method before ordering: anything supplied with a moulded two-pin plug will not fit a UK socket and would need replacing rather than adapting.

At the foot of a tree, angle it slightly off vertical rather than straight up so the bark takes on some relief. The solar version assumes an open aspect through the day, which rules out the shaded borders where this kind of spotlight usually goes: in that case, the mains-wired version is the one to take.
